Eruption and Shedding of Baby Teeth:
The lower front baby teeth normally shed first at around 6 to 7 years of age. Gradually, the rest of the baby teeth will be shed off and replaced by adult teeth until around the age of 12. The last adult teeth is generally known as the wisdom teeth, which only erupt during the late teens to early twenties. Inclusive of wisdom teeth, adults will have a total of 32 permanent teeth.
Eruption of Adult Teeth:
If your child’s baby tooth has been lost before their permanent tooth is ready to erupt, there is a risk of the surrounding teeth shifting and permanent teeth coming out misaligned. In such cases, it is recommended placing space maintainers to prevent your child’s teeth from shifting before the permanent tooth erupts.
How often should my child need to meet a dentist?
It is needed for kids to see a dentist regularly. We encourage you to bring your child for a checkup every 6 months, so that any oral health issues can be detected.
How do I prepare my child to see the dentist?
Parents, play a big part in helping a child keep a bright and healthy smile on their faces! It’s important that you set up good tooth brushing habits at home so that a child understands the importance of good oral hygiene. Then, when it’s time to visit the dentist, use positive words to describe how the dentist will help them.

- Prophylaxis:
Bacteria will hide in places we can’t reach, no matter how well we try to brush our teeth. That’s where the dentist comes in to help! Therefore, it is recommended to parents to bring their children to a dentist for thorough cleaning of their teeth at least twice a year. During these visits, our dentist will gently clean their teeth with a soft rubber cup and a mildly gritty paste. This helps to stop the progression of oral diseases such as gingivitis and tooth decay in children by removing plaque and stains.
Fluoride Treatment:
Bad bacteria and certain types of food produce acids that eat away at our tooth enamel, causing tiny, microscopic holes that weaken the tooth. Fluoride helps to strengthen your child’s teeth by repairing these holes through a process called “remineralization”. Fluoride helps to replace the minerals that were lost, creating a new, stronger tooth structure.
