1.Whatis an Overdenture?

Itis a removable partial denture or complete denture that covers and rests on one or more remaining natural teeth, the roots of natural teeth or dental implants.

  1. Why is it used?
  • It maintains existing teeth as a part ofthe remaining ridge.
  • It decreases the rate of resorption of bone on the jaw.
  1. Advantages of overdentures –
  • It maintains the residual ridge (itis the part ofthe jaw where the teeth have been extracted)
  • The denture stability and retention can be enhanced.
  • Patient gets a natural feeling during biting and eating food.

  • Patient does not have to remove all his teeth.
  1. Indications for an Overdenture –
  • Gp1- Patients with few remaining teeth that may be healthy intact or morphologically compromised
  • Gp2- Patients who are diagnosed with severely compromised dentition.

  • Selection of the tooth that needs to be retained

– Has to have good gum condition.

– Should not have any caries.

– Has to be root canal treated.

  • Location of where the teeth have to be.

– Front teeth are always given preference than the back teeth.

– Two teeth in each arch are always preferred.

– Always best to pick single tooth, then two teeth next to each other, as itis difficult to clean.

  • Periodontal management

– Bony defects on the jaw have to be removed.

– The gums have to attached to the tooth making it stronger to support the eating force.

– Complete deep cleaning of the teeth is a must.

  • Root canal treatment of the Tooth (Endodontic therapy)

– Doing root canal treatment of the tooth helps in making the crown root ratio favorable.

– For securing the attachment.

– Reducing the crown of the tooth to provide space for a placement of an artificial tooth on top of it.
